In a ceremony on Wednesday, friends and family of John Stevenson Madkins Jr. honored him by dedicating the iconic blue Oxford water tower to his memory.
The water tower near the Square was dedicated to John Stevenson Madkins Jr. in recognition of his service to the Oxford community water services.
Madkins, a long time employee, was honored and commemorated on Wednesday in a ceremony that dedicated the iconic water tower to his memory. Madkins worked for 47 years at the water commission before his death in November 2013.
Madkins was known for being highly dedicated to his job at the water department, and many people at the ceremony, including Mayor Pat Patterson, shared memorable stories about Madkins and his love for his job and the people of Oxford.
Madkins' wife, Ruby, attended the ceremony along with her two children, son D'Marius and daughter Angel.
Madkins is commemorated by a large stone monument in front of the water tower near the Square.
